George,

Your coverage of the dead deer by the roadside in Meadowbrook Heights, and the city's seeming tardiness in clearing it away, reminds me of a similar situation I encountered while working in Nigeria a couple years ago. Same old problem - why hasn't somebody cleaned this up? - only this time the road kill wasn't deer. Please see below.

Decomposed bodies litter Lagos-Ibadan expressway

"Travellers on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway are daily confronted with gory sights of decomposing bodies littering the busy highway.

The news Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that within the week, more than five bodies littered various areas of the highway.

A regular user of the highway, Mr. Seye Aderibigbe told NAN that he had been noticing some of the bodies for over four weeks and that the indifferent attitude to the dead by all tiers of government was condemnable.

Aderibigbe said that the three tiers of government should be blamed because all of them had a role to play in the maintenance of the highway.

A commercial vehicle driver, Mr. Jimoh Adelegan said that the bodies on the expressway could be as a result of trailer attendants who fell off their vehicles without the knowledge of the drivers.

Adelegan said that he had witnessed three incidents when assistants fell off without the knowledge of the driver, adding that, hit and run drivers could also account for some of the bodies.
Commenting on the situation, the Lagos Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Mr. Kayode Olagunju said the Commission had reminded the Local Councils of their duty to clear bodies on their stretch of the highway.

He explained that it was the responsibility of the FRSC to evacuate accident victims and draw the attention of the relevant authority to clear the bodies that might constitute a health hazard to other Nigerians." (This Day, June 2001)

Editor's Note: The piece in the box above was one Jim found in Nigeria. He is, of course, not the author.

The dead deer Jim is referring to in his note can be found at Deer Accident on Meadowbrook Heights Road and at Deer Accident on Brandywine Drive.
