"The first black Republican elected to the Virginia General Assembly in more than 100 years, Harris served as chairman of U.S. Sen. George F. Allen's successful 2000 campaign, for which he was paid $3,000 a month. The delegate, who is nearing the end of his second two-year term, is unusually tight-lipped about his future and any possible White House appointment. But he is careful not to rule anything out. 'I am focused on doing my legislative duties right now,' Harris said. ....... [Former Scottsville District supervisor Forrest] Marshall, Albemarle GOP Chairman Rob Bell and former delegate hopeful and stock broker Paul Wright would be interested in the delegate's seat if [Harris] is named U.S. attorney for the Western District of Virginia or appointed to a federal post in Washington. Harris later added, 'I am working very hard to fulfill my responsibilities as the 58th District delegate and would caution would-be successors not to erroneously suggest that I have any intention other than to run for re-election this year'" (Bob Gibson, The Daily Progress, 2001). In the meantime, Democratic County Albemarle County Board of Supervisor member Charles Martin [CMartin136@aol.com] says that if Paul Harris vacates his seat in the General Assembly, he "would strongly consider a run for [Harris'] House of Delegate's seat" (electronic mail, Feburary 20, 2001).
He adds, that he "would very much like to hear from those interested in making their comments or pledges." If you have comments about encouraging Paul Harris to accept another post or about Charles Martin's interest in the Delegate's seat, please send them to george@loper.org and the most representative will be posted on my web site with full attribution.
